The My Son Sanctuary is an ancient Champa site, preserving over 70 temples and towers with unique architecture. The mystical beauty, combined with the tranquil space of the valley, has made it an unmissable destination, attracting visitors to learn about the Champa civilization.
Address: 50 km from Da Nang, located in Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam
My Son was the capital of the Champa Kingdom from the 4th to the 12th century. This complex includes over 70 temples and towers with unique architecture, built from fired bricks without the use of mortar or adhesive materials.
Notably, despite having stood for thousands of years, the towers here remain strong, with only minor cracks, proving the exceptional construction skills of the Champa people.
In 1995, the complex was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site, marking an important milestone in preserving and promoting the cultural values of the Champa people.
This archaeological site was once buried deep in the forest and forgotten by the world until 1898, when a French archaeologist discovered it.
The temples and towers here were meticulously built, featuring intricate designs dedicated to gods, statues of deities, and inscriptions in Sanskrit and ancient Champa script. Each structure bears the deep cultural and religious marks of the Champa people.
Since then, My Son has become one of the most important destinations to explore the beauty of the Champa civilization.
My Son is also famous for its 80-meter wide ancient stone path, connecting the temples and towers in the complex.
This path not only connects the architectural structures but also showcases the strength and craftsmanship of the Champa people in construction.
Despite having endured thousands of years, the stones along this path remain intact, creating a mystical atmosphere that tells stories of a flourishing period of Champa civilization.
This is the traditional dance of the Champa people, with graceful steps, colorful costumes, and characteristic folk music. The Apsara dance recreates the image of celestial dancers in the ancient temples and towers.
Apsara dance performances are regularly held at the site at fixed times during the day (9:15 AM, 10:45 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM).
The Katê Festival is one of the unique festivals of the Champa people, held in the 7th month of the Champa calendar (around October in the Gregorian calendar).
This festival is not only a time to honor the gods but also an opportunity to pray for abundant harvests, prosperity, and harmony with nature.
If you visit My Son during this time, don’t miss the chance to participate in the Katê Festival. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Champa people’s beliefs, and also to enjoy the lively and colorful festival atmosphere.
